This seems like a simple question but when you think about it, when you play slots, usually you end up losing. While the bonuses are fun the casino usually ends up having your money in their machines. Sure, it feels great leaving a winner but unless you are extremely lucky leaving a winner is the exception. And if you think about it those winnings eventually end up in the casino%26#39;s machines unless you have won a huge jackpot and are not a high roller. So, how can playing still be fun even though you know you will most likely end up losing? Is it optimistic idealism or just plain stupidity?
Why are slots so addicting?
I don%26#39;t know, but gosh you are right.... I hear myself saying (to my self) ';I will only play till I lose ______'; and then playing for a certain amount of time I am thrilled if I am only down some certain amount of less';. When you think about it, it is kinda crazy. I think about how if I hadn%26#39;t put it in the slot I could have just gone out and purchased something else I have been wanting (some technology item, etc) and I%26#39;d have something to show for it. Yet still, I do like to play %26#39;em. I played some blackjack locally tonight and came out $50 ahead in a short time (low roller, at $3 table) and thought about how I should just play table games in Vegas, no so many slots, since I rarely come out ahead at the end of the trip.
Like the scene in Vegas Vacation when Clark Griswold goes up to the blackjack table where the dealer who seems to take pleasure in beating him out says, ';I have an idea. Why don%26#39;t you give me half of what you were going to bet, I%26#39;ll take you out back and beat the h-ll out of you, and we%26#39;ll call it even'; (loose quote, not exact). I thought it was just about right.
Why are slots so addicting?
Answer A: Oh because just LOVE all the cigarette smoke burning our eyes, our ears overloaded with the sounds of 500 machines on either side of us, or the thousands of germs hibernating on each and every button! Oh yeah.
Answer B: All the pretty lights are so neat....can%26#39;t help but watch pictures of diamonds, cherries, banana%26#39;s, 7%26#39;s, etc. flip by taunting you mentally with ';we have YOUR money, we have YOUR money!';
I like the quarter slots usually and only BET MAX when I run up a big amount. Yeah call me a Low Roller.....I won%26#39;t cry. ;)
There must be some subliminal messages flashing by while we are playing....your a winner....here comes the big one.......that bonus round is coming soon.......cuz I definately get under a spell where slots are concerned....just one more $20.......$1000 later I%26#39;m like what the hell...how could I be so stupid!! LOL
Also it seems you get a decent win ($200-500) every now and then to keep ya feeding the machines waiting for the even bigger hit.
wish there was a pill to take the thrill away. I always envy my friends if they say I can%26#39;t stand to gamble...sometimes wish I felt that way....but noooooooooooo I%26#39;m a addicctttttttt!
oh well its fun a lot of the time!
i%26#39;ve just come back from vegas and being from the UK i found the slots to be the most boring thing in the world
when we have machines over here they have a hold and nudge and features so that you actually do something
the ones in vegas are just bet max and spin and that%26#39;s it.. there%26#39;s nothing to do at all.. where%26#39;s the fun in that !!!!
can%26#39;t understand how anyone can spend all day on them
I think it is sometimes our personalities that dictates how we feel about the slots - I look and want to have a go but I am very tight and only use 1c machines, put a whole dollar in and usually get bored after using 50c - take the money - voucher - and save it til the following day - VERY LOW ROLLER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ecapism pure and simple ,at the time nothing else matters,bills worries etc all vanish in the moment(or so i am told)
Because the winning spin is always going to be the next one.
';Because the winning spin is always going to be the next one';
:-)
I agree with Firstimer123...pure escapism which in itself is pretty pathetic in a world filled with so many forms of entertainment. My husband gets it from being outside with nature. My sister and I just returned from a week end at our local casino that had an '; event'; to pull in the customers. The entertainment was pretty awful....we laughed and remarked what people will endure for a free buffett. We later had a comped dinner at their steakhouse with impeccable food and service. We jokingly told the waiter that we did enjoy the food and the service for the $2500 free meal. No doubt the slots are a loosing propostiton over the long run, but it sure is a thrill when that machine locks up on a jackpot!
It is an entertainment experience. It is just like going to Disneyworld/Disneyland, a cruise, etc. X dollars leaves your wallet for all those activities. You come back and you bring back mostly memories. I%26#39;ve been on a 7 day cruise. I also go regularly to Las Vegas for 7 days. I would say the total cost in X dollars leaving my wallet was about the same either way. It%26#39;s all about what your preference in entertainment is. I prefer gambling to a cruise. Other people won%26#39;t go near any gambling arena. No harm, no foul.
