With the meet about a month away, I thought I would post a few points on some of the places that I enjoy in Las Vegas.
Atomic Liquors is a fun neighborhood bar located at 917 East Fremont St in Las Vegas, Nevada. A refreshing change from the Strip or the nearby Fremont Street Experience. Atomic Liquors has one of the oldest liquor licenses in Las Vegas. Legend has it that it named Atomic because way back when they were testing atomic bombs outside the city, the people responsible for their care, development and detonation used to drink there. Atomic Liquors has also served as a movie set, the bar scenes in the movie Casino were shot there.
I recently returned from a visit to the Atomic on the 6th of August, met up again with Scott the Bartender. If you go, please say hello to him from the only man to walk in there in a white dinner jacket and tux in the past 20 years. I was welcomed by the owners, Joe and Stella Sobchik, very nice folks indeed. The Atomic is located in an area once considered less desirable but, like the nearby El Cortez, the Sobchik’s are watching the rising tide of prosperity in that area.
Down to the bar basics - The Atomic is a regular blue collar, neighborhood bar. They serve the standard beers and bar drinks. Tourists are welcome, in fact I enjoy the taste of home after the noisy glitter of the Strip and the nearby Fremont Street Experience. The Atomic is much like many a neighborhood bars in my home town of Chicago. Like most bars, a quiet place or not depending on the crowd. As you walk in the front door, you face part of the L shaped bar running east and west, with the ever present video poker machines built in. Turn the corner and the left side of the bar runs north and south. There is a well stocked juke box on that side, as well as a pool table or two. It is that side of the bar that was used for the bar scenes of the film Casino. The bathrooms are to the right of the front part of the bar.
Around the corner is another fun neighborhood bar, the nearby Bunkhouse Saloon, located at 124 South 11th Street, between Fremont and Carson, in Las Vegas. More about the Bunkhouse later.

I am here to.
What did you think of the info on the Atomic. It is the framework for a review of the place I am thinking about
I%26#39;ve never been there but you did provide a good description of the place. What more are you planning to add? I am an off-strip person. After so many trips and so many years, I don%26#39;t need a strip view or things like that. I would have definitely joined you in the infamous crawl!
A poster had asked about the Gold Spike. said it was not as bad as advertised. It is actually getting better but you would have had to seen it before to understand. The same of the Atomic.
The crawl will be fun but the experience will be different with a large party than for myself, as a solo guy drinking alone at the bar.
Still we have to enjoy it while we can. The colorful folks will be moving on as the redevelopment continues. I only hope it slows down for a while.
I%26#39;m here, will show up and do as I%26#39;m told! Ha!!
At present my mind is on things other than Vegas in 4 wks, first I have to get back to the US of A and home!
