Hi,
We%26#39;re planning a 4 day trip to Las Vegas in December around X-mas.
What exactly is the Grand Canyon %26amp; is it worth the drive? From what I%26#39;ve read on the forum, it would be a full day activity.
Is it worth it?
Grand Canyon: Worth it?
On a 4 day trip, I wouldn%26#39;t bother, unless you%26#39;ve already seen everything in Las Vegas that you want to see on previous visits.
Generally, if you don%26#39;t know what it is, it isn%26#39;t going to be worth it.
(But have you seriously never HEARD of the Grand Canyon and you don%26#39;t know what it is?)
Grand Canyon: Worth it?
i would say it is absolutley worth a visit. usually i suggest a half day helo tour if you have so few days in the area. a week in the GC is perfect for me - rafting, mules, etc. With your limited time do the helo tour. since you have read the forums you are getting some insight. do a search on the grand canyon using your fav search engine - you%26#39;ll find out exactly what it is.
The Grand Canyon is spectacular, and so are Zion Canyon, Bryce Canyon, and several other places in the vicinity. However, with a four day trip to Vegas... no, I wouldn%26#39;t include the Grand Canyon in that trip. You won%26#39;t have time to do it justice and you will take away from your time in Vegas, which you will probably feel 4 days is too little for in the first place.
You can learn about Grand Canyon National Park, and see photos, at http://www.nps.gov/grca
Only you can judge if it would be worth it for you to make the trip.
Note that many of the helicopter tours don%26#39;t visit Grand Canyon National Park. They visit the so-called ';Grand Canyon West';, as shallower area of the canyon, but closer to Las Vegas. If it%26#39;s your first time to Las Vegas, and you will enjoy every minute of your time exploring the casino properties, gambling, and enjoying the LV atmosphere, then it may be wise to leave the Grand Canyon for a future visit.
The Grand Canyon is a great thing to see but not on a 4 day visit to Vegas. What we%26#39;ve done a couple times is gone for 7 or 8 days and stay in Vegas for 3 days go to the Grand Canyon on the week-end (stay there for a night or 2) and then return and finish the vacation in Vegas. When I was doing this I could get a full comp from Lady Luck (3 days)downtown and either full or almost full from Ballys(3 days) on the strip. A lot of hotels feel they can get most of your gambling in 3 days compared to 7 so it is easier to get room comps this way.
Is it worth it? Absolutely! I would take a one day tour. They provide a guide, transportation and lunch. It will be a 12 hour trip. The tour will pass via the Hoover Dam, another great site to see.
my wife and i found the grand canyon a major disapointment.
we took the scenic airlines tour to the south rim and spent the afternoon there.
not too sure what everyone finds so fascinating about it.
after ten minutes at the edge we went to a cafe and waited until our bus took us back to the plane.
the plane journey was excellent with scenic, but be warned that there is a lot of turbulence as you head to the canyon(the sick bags were used frequently by some of the passengers)
the other people on the tour seemed more enthused by the scenery,so maybe we are just spoiled by the scottish highlands which are far more colourful and awe inspiring.
i would spend the full 4 days in vegas and give the canyon a miss.
looking, I once traveled to the GC while in Vegas for 4 days. I%26#39;m glad that I saw it, but it did ruin the rest of my trip because of the additional fatigue of traveling after flying in from the East coast. If you want to maximize yor Vegas time, I%26#39;d pass on the GC.
I think you have to go to the Grand Canyon....even just once in your life to say you%26#39;ve done it! I don%26#39;t agree with Chow Chow....as much as I love the Scottish highlands, nothing compares to the Canyon. Turbulence is the luck of the draw when you take a plane/heli trip over it but it%26#39;s the best way to enjoy the whole experience.I did feel a little ropey going there on a 9 seater but the pilot was great; gave tips on how to take my mind off the queasiness %26amp; relax.
If you are only going to Las Vegas for 4 days, don%26#39;t drive to GC. Takes far too long out your vacation. I did the plane journey in my first 5 day trip. Well worth getting up early for!
Have a great trip
Mrs C
I would say the Grand Canyon is a must. I am surprised you have never heard of it. it%26#39;s one of the natural wonders of the world. We will visit both South Rim (3 days) and North Rim (2 days) during our trip. I am way more excited about something so unbelievably naturally beautiful than about Vegas. In fact, if I traveled alone, I would have skipped Vegas and just focused on the national parks.
