Vegas newbies in local joints

Hey guys,

Seems like I%26#39;m posting a lot these days!! My wife and I are headed to Vegas for our first time on Sunday. We%26#39;ll be there thru Thursday. Staying at Luxor. We are planning on doing the Vegas ';thing'; with shows, gambling, ooohing and aahing at the Strip, but we are also trying to set up some time away from all of that.

We are planning on having dinner at Lindo Michoacan and Paymons (with hookah to follow!!). We also might try to hit some of the ';locals'; casinos.

Here%26#39;s my question: Are we going to stand out as tourists like a sore thumb at these places or does it really matter?? I know they are close enough to expect tourists, but I just don%26#39;t want to feel out of place.

Any tips, suggestions, words of reassurance?

Thanks!

jaspa

Vegas newbies in local joints

Our large group just returned yesterday from a long weekend. We went downtown, and found many locals in this area. Great experience. we didn%26#39;t go too far off strip to find local casinos.

Vegas newbies in local joints

jaspa, I can only speak of one local place. South Point. It%26#39;s filled with all sorts of people, and I couldn%26#39;t tell a local from a tourist. I have a buddy who lives in Vegas, and being a local, he never goes to the strip, and doesn%26#39;t often go to even the local casinos unless they have some sort of dinner coupon that was mailed to the local area. (Or unless his girlfriend gets an urge to gamble!)

On my last trip, I was alone, stayed Downtown(just off Fremont St) and met several locals, one in a casino bar(real estate saleswoman) and a retiree(who had moved to Vegas about 20 yrs ago). I would suggest to not carry a camera or one of those yard-long drrinks or a ';football'; of beer. Enjoy your trip!

One of the local casinos that I like is Texas Station, but its too far and you need a car, and probably taxy will bo too much, depending where you staying

We go to the El Cortez Downtown every time we are in Vegas and it%26#39;s mostly locals ( mainly retirees and the chronically unemployed) and have always felt very welcome. We only show up about four times a year at their roulette tables and when we walk in the door several people at the table yell ';Where the hell have you been!%26#39;

They are great folks and we love the low minimums ( 25 cent roulette and the way the drinks flow ). I don%26#39;t think you should worry at all about ';sticking out'; the locals are a friendly lot and don%26#39;t care where you%26#39;re from , from what I can see.

Downtown casinos are usually 50-50 mix (locals and visitors).

The casinos outside the strip (I don%26#39;t mean Rio or Palms) are more like local casinos

They are like Texas Station, Suncoast, Fiesta, SantaFe and so on.

None of them have any luxary, and are just your basic casino

Jaspa, I take it back. I%26#39;ve been downtown once to see Fremont Street. Popped in and out of the Casinos and really couldn%26#39;t tell. I%26#39;ve also been to SunCoast twice. It%26#39;s way off the strip. I wasn%26#39;t really looking for locals. Was there with one, but he looked no different than me. I doubt you%26#39;ll ever have to worry. We%26#39;re all ';gamblers'; (well, most)

I have been to many many local casinos- both near and quite far away. You do not have to worry. It really doesn%26#39;t matter if you are a local or a tourist- you will definitely not feel out of place. So, just go where you want and enjoy yourself.

You might also leave the Bermuda shorts, black socks, sandals and fanny pack in the room. Also don%26#39;t refer to ';Lost Wages'; and laugh loudly. Seriously though you%26#39;ll be fine, nobody will care.

Nothing says tourist more than spliting face cards, or hitting on the dealers 5 or 6.

Or like goat wacker says the bermuda%26#39;s, black socks and fanny pack.
